No one has to know and no one under any circumstances has the right to search through your personal property, that would be invasive and wrong. Do they search for weapons, drugs, et cetera? You should ask questions don't be afraid to, you're in a new environment and under new circumstances. There is no such thing as a stupid question, and I'm sure people will be willing to help, especially people under the same circumstances as you.

You could get non lethal weapons like pepper spray or a taser, or if you want you could get a knife, but these things can be hazardous to have in many ways. I generally carry a flip out baton or an 8" knife which I keep very sharp. Of course I don't carry these into public areas, only areas where I know I'm at risk of someone mugging me or attacking me. That sucks how have they been less helpful?
