It's Italian- it means "you're welcome" or "if you please"- It's hard to translate. If I opened a door for a lady, I would say "Prego, signora...." or if I gave you something you would say "Grazie"- (thanks) and then I would say "Prego...". In other situations you might use "Prego" to say (politely) "Please... tell me..." like a waiter in a formal restaurant etc.
