There wasn't really a coherent "insurgency". You had both shia and sunni groups who were just as likely to fight each other as they were to fight the coalition or the government. You had some foreign radicals some who were shia or sunni and some who were al-quaeda, most of the Iraqis didn't like al-quaeda though. I think the Afghan resistance is much more homogenous than the Iraqi one.

My general impression of Iraqis was the sunnis just wanted us out of their country and were generally willing to talk and bullshit and have a conversation, but shia pretty much hated us and wouldn't even talk to us unless they had to. But both groups absolutely despised each other.

Took small arms fire once, but I didn't have to return fire, I called it up on the radio and they hit them with counter battery artillery. Took mortars and rockets a lot, like once a week probably. Had an IED go off probably about a half mile in front of me once. When I was deployed I worked in a prison, so I got into a lot of scuffles and physical confrontations with prisoners.
