My all time favorite band is Amon Amarth. I pretty much am heavy into the Gothenburg Sound like Dark Tranquility and COB, Folk Metal like Ensiferum and Symphonic Black Metal like Emperor and Graveworm just to name a very few. None of these are particularly political or left wing though, and if you want some left wing metal I know of a few communist BM bands

It is? In the netherlands it's pretty well known, with regular dubstep nights at most slightly alternative venues.

Mostly ableton, and a collection of freeware plugins. You'd be amazed at the large array of freeware audio plugins there are on the internet. Music production is starting to get really cheap these days, with the advancement of free software and such.
