I thought so, I've seen you mention it once or twice. I picked up 'Matter' from the library but as its the first Iain M. Banks book I've read a lot of it was kinda lost on me so I only got about halfway through. However, I'm intrigued by the concept of the Culture and I've just found the eBook for 'Consider Phlebas', which I think is the first one? Gonna have a read of that.

As for films, there are some pretty good films you would enjoy that are less publicised but they aren't in anyway pretentious or "high brow". Land and Freedom is amazing, for example, if you haven't seen that. In fact, check out the thread I recently made for recommendations in Lit&Film, all the films in my list are just fantastic and if you watch some, you will be surprised how quickly you are weened off "execrable wank"
