Actually, if you're interested, there's a good book of qualitative sociology titled The Dignity of Working Men by MichÃ¨le Lamont. It's a comparative study of the of social and moral universes of the working class in both the United States and France. And I have to say that the intra-class antagonism in the US is something that might almost seem surreal to outside observers. "Nigger" is one of the terms which denote status distinction within the black working class.
