Abou tThat textbook was written in 1931, 7 years before stalin did anything on dialectics. So its no surprise that it gives the traditional marxist undedrstanding of dialectics. About that trend thing, I've heard the book has been revised when it was taught.
The negation of the negation is a pretty big part of the dialectic, it is highly unusual not to include it on a work about the dialectic, so mine and althussers standpoint on this makes sense. To neglect such an important concept inhis work can only mean he didn't think it was part of the dialectic. Unless you can give another explanation.
