Good point, I think a fair number of those ruling class people backed the fascists because of their fear of communism. A classic example would be President Hindenburg, who basically gave Hitler nigh-unlimited power after the Reichstag Fire (the "enabling law").
It's also kinda ironic that my interest in Hitler made me realize he was not the "lone lunatic" our media often portrays him as, but very much a product of his society and immediate surroundings (both the global events such as World War I or the Great Depression and the more personal ones like his childhood and time in Vienna and Munich). This prompted me to read more about materialism - and hence Marx.
