Sorry for prying on your conversation with proletariatrevolution, but I just happened to see you were interested in the PSL on his profile. We have three branches in California (Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose), so you should definitely give those branches a call (http://www.pslweb.org/site/PageServe...name=contactus) and ask if they have members in your area. California is probably the state where we have the most members, but even if there are none in your area, think of me in Columbus, Ohio! I'm stuck here all by myself, but I manage to do a lot of party work.

I'm not sure, I don't think so. (I don't live in Southern California, by the way)

Political Statement
Here in the US, the flag waves for the people who own the place--the real people in power. People like Halliburton, General Electric, Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Exxon, Nike, etc. They reap the rewards, while we bear the burdens. And supposedly we're 'all in this together' ("united we stand" right?), part of a community of interests. Well, I've got news for people who think that everything proceeds nice and fairly and evenly in this supposed 'land of opportunity.' What we are living in, is an extremely lopsided situation. The vast majority of society's resources are owned and thus controlled by a small elite coterie of unelected, unaccountable, unrecallable wealthy businessmen. These rich and wealthy jerks who own this country couldn't give two shits about you or me.

The truly tragic thing is that this country is actually quite rich in material resources, and has very advanced infrastructure, such that a much better life could be had by virtually all. What I propose is that these resources be used for the public good, rather than the enrichment of a small minority. In a word what I propose is socialism. Specifically what I want is a system of government adhering to republican form, with all the attendant checks and balances, with a constitution, including a bill of rights, that with elected, recallable officials serving constitutionally limited terms of office, plans the economy in the interests of all.

I'm not suggesting that this would function flawlessly, but I am quite confident that such an order would serve the interests of the vast majority of citizens in a way greatly exceeding the lopsided arrangement we have currently. To understand the strengths of such a system, all one has to do is look at what has been achieved by planned economies in the 20th century. The Soviet Union radically increased their citizens life expectancy considerably, as did the PRC. Cuba, a small island nation with limited resources, has managed to create a system of medical care which allows them to not only take care of its own citizens, but to send doctors abroad.

Some quotes I like:

"From its origin the bourgeoisie was saddled with its antithesis: capitalists cannot exist without wage workers"
--Engels, Socialism: Utopian and Scientific

"The productive forces are the result of mans practical energy, but that energy is in turn circumscribed by the conditions in which man is placed by the productive forces already acquired, by the form of society which exists before him, which he does not create, which is the product of the preceding generation."
--Marx, 1846 Letter to Annenkov (1846)

"The slave frees himself when, of all the relations of private property, he abolishes only the relation of slavery and thereby becomes a proletarian; the proletarian can free himself only by abolishing private property in general."
--Engels, Principles of Communism (1847)

"What is the proletariat? The proletariat is that class in society which lives entirely from the sale of its labor and does not draw profit from any kind of capital; whose weal and woe, whose life and death, whose sole existence depends on the demand for labor hence, on the changing state of business, on the vagaries of unbridled competition. The proletariat, or the class of proletarians, is, in a word, the working class of the 19th century [and onwards -UB]"
--Engels, Principles of Communism (1847)

"You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society, private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population; its existence for the few is solely due to its non-existence in the hands of those nine-tenths. You reproach us, therefore, with intending to do away with a form of property, the necessary condition for whose existence is the non-existence of any property for the immense majority of society.

In one word, you reproach us with intending to do away with your property. Precisely so; that is just what we intend."
--Marx, Communist Manifesto (1848)

"A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon — authoritarian means, if such there be at all; and if the victorious party does not want to have fought in vain, it must maintain this rule by means of the terror which its arms inspire in the reactionists. Would the Paris Commune have lasted a single day if it had not made use of this authority of the armed people against the bourgeois? Should we not, on the contrary, reproach it for not having used it freely enough?"
--Engels, On Authority (1872)

"We’re taught at such an early age to be against the communists, yet most of us don’t have the faintest idea what communism is. Only a fool lets somebody else tell him who his enemy is."
