I joined RevLeft about 3 years ago I believe, and was insanely active for about 6 months - to the point of almost being nominated to the CC... Then I went abroad for six months and delved deep into Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, and other existentialist writings, and found myself deep in the pit of nihilism. As you may imagine, it's very difficult to be a revolutionary when you're also a nihilist. So that led me to avoid RevLeft for an extended period of time (I was also posting on another leftist forum called "Conquering the Divide" for about a year before I went abroad, which took up much RevLeft time). I have only returned to RevLeft because I recently graduated college and found myself in much need of intellectual stimulation and a recent returned interest in revolutionary politics (I was able to overcome nihilism about 7 months ago). So there's my story as vague as I'd like to make it

Nietzsche was anything but a nihilist. His entire philosophy was geared towards the coming wave of nihilism which he felt would overtake the industrialized nations. Nihilism, for Nietzsche, is not simply the 'belief in nothing' but also the entire lack of individual will-power present within the "herd." Therefore you are correct when you say that he was attempting to bring meaning and belief back into human lives, for he certainly was, but this meaning must come from the individual through the creative process (refer to TSZ ch.1 - though it is written enitrely in metaphor). Hope this makes sense.
