  • Revolutionary Socialists (Egypt)

The group for allies and sympathizers with the Revolutionary Socialists (Egypt). Articles, statements, and various analyses made by the RS will be posted here. A brief description (lifted from Wikipedia):

The Revolutionary Socialists (RS) are a Trotskyist organisation in Egypt. They are currently involved in establishing the Workers Democratic Party and the Coalition of Socialist Forces.

The group began in the late 1980s among small circles of students influenced by Trotskyism. Adopting the current name by April 1995, the RS grew from a few active members, when the Egyptian left was very much underground, to a couple of hundred by the Second Palestinian Intifada. Despite not being able to freely organise under President Hosni Mubarak, the group's membership still increased due to their participation in the Palestinian solidarity movement.

According to Mark LeVine, a professor of history at the University of California, the RS "played a crucial role organising Tahrir (during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011) and now in the workers movement" post-President Hosni Mubarak . . . In the aftermath of Mubarak's resignation as President, the RS is calling for permanent revolution. On May Day 2011, they chanted "A workers’ revolution against the capitalist government", while marching to Tahrir Square. They argue that the working class, particularly of Cairo, Alexandria and Mansoura were the key players in ousting Mubarak, rather than the Egyptian youths' use of social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, as has been widely reported. The RS sees the role of the Muslim Brotherhood post-Mubarak as "counter-revolutionary".

The RS along with many other Egyptian leftist organisations are also seeking to establish a new workers party in the wake of Mubarak's downfall. The party, named the Workers Democratic Party, aims to have "workers as the main players and leaders of the party joined by a number of intellectuals". The establishment of such a party in Egypt is still illegal under the current government with the new Political Parties Law issued on 29 March 2011, where the establishment of class-based parties is strictly prohibited. Kamal Khalil - a leading RS member - responded by saying they are not concerned of the legality of the party: "We don't want a party based on paper, we want a party based in factories and workplaces".

  • Democratic Socialists of America

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly democratic socialist presence in American communities and politics.

At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. For example, we support reforms that:

decrease the influence of money in politics

empower ordinary people in workplaces and the economy

restructure gender and cultural relationships to be more equitable.

We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. Our vision is of a society in which people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism — a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.

DSA's political perspective is called Where We Stand (http://www.dsausa.org/where_we_stand). It says, in part,

We are socialists because we reject an international economic order sustained by private profit, alienated labor, race and gender discrimination, environmental destruction, and brutality and violence in defense of the status quo.

We are socialists because we share a vision of a humane international social order based both on democratic planning and market mechanisms to achieve equitable distribution of resources, meaningful work, a healthy environment, sustainable growth, gender and racial equality, and non-oppressive relationships.

  • Mensheviks

The Mensheviks were a faction of the Russian socialist movement that emerged in 1904 after a dispute in the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party between Vladimir Lenin and Julius Martov, leading to the party splitting into two factions, one being the Mensheviks and the other being the Bolsheviks. The dispute originated at the Second Congress of that party, ostensibly over minor issues of party organization. Martov's supporters, who were in the minority in a crucial vote on the question of party membership, came to be called "Mensheviks"

  • Marx Memorial Library Members

A group for members or supporters of the Marx Memorial Library in London.

In the Library building with the help of Harry Quelch Lenin edited Iskra. 20th century press was also based in the International Brigade Archive room .

In 1933, the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Karl Marx, a delegate meeting comprising trade unionists, veteran socialists belonging to the Labour Party and Communist Party, and representatives of the Labour Research Department and Martin Lawrence Publishers Ltd., considered setting up a permanent memorial to him. The meeting was held at Conway Hall against the backdrop of the Nazi burning of the books in Germany. In these circumstances, delegates resolved that the most appropriate memorial to Marx would be a Library.

Given its place in London’s radical history, 37a Clerkenwell Green was considered the ideal premises. Thus the Marx Memorial Library and Workers’ School was founded.

Study classes, held in the evenings, became the distinguishing feature of the Workers’ School, which was divided into faculties of science, history and political economy. Prominent speakers included J.D. Bernal, J.S. Haldane, Eric Hobsbawm, Christopher Hill, Tom Mann.

In 1934 Viscount Hastings, who had studied under the great Mexican artists Diego Rivera, executed a large fresco style mural on the wall of the first-floor reading room. Titled ‘The Worker of the Future Clearing away the Chaos of Capitalism’, it illustrates events and leading thinkers in the history of British Labour.

A Library of books, pamphlets, archives and posters grew over the years and was augmented significantly by the donation of the International Brigade Association archive in 1975, the Klugmann Collection in 1977, the Bernal Peace Library in 1994 and the archives of the print unions in 2009.

The Library expanded to occupy the whole building over the years. The premises achieved Grade II listed building status after the facade was restored in 1968-9 to the way it had originally looked in 1738. During further refurbishments in 1986, tunnels were discovered underneath the Library.

For over eighty years the Library has continued its work collecting published and archival material on the science of Marxism, trade unionism and the working class movement and making them available to through education courses.

  • Marxist-Leninists

Marxism-Leninism is the theory and practice of the Communists, who uphold the works of Marx, Engels and Lenin in the struggle for proletarian revolution, the construction of socialism, and the triumph of communism on a world scale. It is the scientific ideology of the working-class and its vanguard which accomplish these aims.

Marxism-Leninism bases itself on historical and dialectical materialism, taking into account the objective material conditions existent in each country and region. It supports just struggles against imperialism and neo-colonialism whose victories are guaranteed through the leading role of the working-class in said struggles. It supports internationalism as the guiding basis of the foreign policy of the socialist state and in the approach to inter-imperialist conflicts. Marxist-Leninists fight for both democratic and socialist demands and, where necessary in the world, carry out any bourgeois-democratic tasks in tandem with the uninterrupted move over into the socialist revolution.

The struggles waged by Marx, Engels and Lenin against all forms of revisionism, opportunism and reformism constituted both the defense of scientific socialism and its creative development, opposing both "left" and right-wing deviations.

The construction of socialism in the Soviet Union and likeminded countries provided a superior alternative to the capitalist system. The treacherous policies pursued by the restorers of capitalism constituted a heavy setback for the world working-class movement, but they could not reverse the nature of capitalism and the inevitability of class struggles for socialism under it.

Marxism-Leninism remains the ideology of the working-class by virtue of its scientific content and objective merits in the epoch of imperialism and the decay of capitalism.

As the tendency name suggests, this group is for interested leftists to come together, dispell and find quick refutations of common myths surrounding economics, discrimination, Communism itself and other subjects that commonly appear in the discourse of modern politics.

  • Orthodox Trotskyism

Orthodox Trotskyism, so called by both adherents and detractors, is a political current within the broader Trotskyist movement that bases itself on the work of Leon Trotsky and his associates, such as James P. Cannon, who advanced Marxist theory in the direction indicated by Trotsky's work, in opposition to the revisionist theories of Pablo, Shachtman, Cliff and others. Orthodox Trotskyists emphasise the analysis, first outlined by Trotsky, of the Soviet Union as a degenerated workers' state, of the Stalinist bureaucracy as a contradictory stratum, and of the present epoch of the class struggle as being characterised by a deep crisis of leadership that can only be resolved by forging, on a firm basis, a Fourth International of revolutionary Bolsheviks-Leninists. This group is for adherents to the orthodox Trotskyist line, and every comrade who is interested in orthodox Trotskyist theory.
