Project Logo

We talked about getting a recognisable log earlier. So I sat and though about a good logo. So i got the idea of combining the Hammer and Sickle with the "At"(@) symbol.

Maybe our project will evolve to something more then a video project. maybe it will be a massive cyber activist media movement.
What you think? I can draw something els if you got any ideas!

Well, I kinda like that symbol, but the raised fist is perhaps a more universal Leftist icon. The hammer and sickle is of course evocative of the USSR, which I don't really have much of a problem with, but some will.

honestly think that image is pretty good. would a trifecta of the 3 fevleft logos be too messy?

    <like that?
  4. Tablo
I like it. Very nice and simple. Anyone else want to contribute some logo ideas?

I don't want a hammer and sickle as a our symbol. Yes, it may be nostalgic and in honour of our past comrades, but some folks equate it with something as a bad as the Nazi swastika. It's not worth clinging too. I was thinking something more general, and more anti-capitalist than actually socialist. It's good to be proud of our views but we're not going to persuade many would-be socialists or anti-capitalists with the word "socialism", at least to begin with. Don't get me wrong, I like the logo, but I just don't think the hammer and sickle is the place to start.

    Agree with Expropriate.
Although I like what you've done with the logo. I just feel it's a bit strong. The problem, as I see it, is that people have grown up with a very negative idea about The hammer and sickle and if that's going to be one of the first things they see, they might instantly Label us as "leftist nutjobs" and not even bother to take the time to see what we're actually saying.

I like it, although it does bare a striking resemblance to the Submedia.tv logo.

Its a good icon for now at least. I doubt they would care if we used that logo, who knows, we might even be able to collaborate with other underground media networks. A side note on that, If we really want to get serious then maybe we should network with some of the indy-medias around the globe. We could really get some prime footage from them.

Perhaps a typical red fist holding a video camera of some sort?

I agree with Expropriate too. We don't want anything that might scare anyone off before they even watch our stuff.

You could also use something which plays with the name of this production group...maybe that would be easier?

This is only a sketch for another idea for a logo....nothing defined. I wrote "Left" instead of "Leftist"...to make a staircase effect and in general used the most simple methods. But I don't know if this would be a good idea either because of the outright leftist connotation and some people don't touch anything which is called "leftist"...just like they would evade the hammer and sickle.
Just wanted to add my thoughts on this Logo design thing....

As I understand it, one of the major goals of this project is to refute misconceptions and lies about leftism. To water down our leftist identity is to admit that the capitalists are right about the history of leftism. Trying to change our names or symbols is saying that the historical Left was bad - which is precisely the sort of attitude we want to combat.
  12. Tablo
We certainly will not be changing our symbols, but if someone sees a big hammer and sickle on the screen at the start of the video they may look at is as being some evil commie propaganda. We can use some less recognized symbols of class struggle for sure.

I actually really like the look of that.

And if it is in the end? then they will realize how objective and correct the documentary was, and they will look at the communist symbol, and they will have to debung everything because they think its biased communist propoganda, then they try to look the facts up and they realize it was correct.
I doesn't have to be a big symbol like those massive corporations, just a small one in the corner at the end.

I'd say people most likely watch things they think come from a common source...mainstream stuff. To inflict more leftist thought into the big stream of media, you first of all have to win the audience by usual means...nothing too deviant from the mainstream...
When you show the logo at the end...then there'll be no rejection watching it from the start. But if you think about reviews that could come after a time, some could blindly bash this and label it communist (because of the logo even more) which it is but that doesn't take away that it's likely less people would watch it from the start. It's only strategy...
    Just adding thoughts.....
If you are all sure about using this symbol, then do it....nothing wrong with that. You want to show media (@) and it's communist (hammer and sickle).

Are we going to be defending communism? Yes. So what's the point in denying that we are communists?

Having said that, I completely agree that the symbol should be at the end, not the beginning. Or we could just not use any symbol at all - especially on videos that we intend to distribute far and wide.

If we actually do use a logo, we become a brand. im not too down on using a Sickleandhammer@ sign. how about instead of any logo, the final few seconds could be a quote on a red backdrop that has to do with the subject of the video?
  18. Tablo
I like that idea. If we want some logo we can always come up with it later.
  19. Robocommie
    Robocommie
Yeah, no need for a logo really. Just a project name that we can slap, "This video by..." at the end.

As far as this goes, I sympathize, but I find it's far more easy to convince people of the benefits of something by saying, "Hey man, how would you like a government that did this? Or how would you like your workplace to be like that? Well, that's socialism/Marxism/etc." And then because you snuck it on them, they're forced to actually think about it instead of just write it off and say, "Oh well Communism doesn't work, it's a failed system it's a blah blah blah."

I'm with you. If we just in their face and yell "I'm a Commie, now listen to me!" they aren't gonna be very interested in our perspective due to the bad image we currently have.
