how do you define martial arts?

When ppl talk about martial arts, how do you define "martial arts"? I take it literally as in systems and techniques relating to war. I include fire arms proficiency and fencing in this. And I am not just talking about gun kata. I have a feeling that I might get some flack for this.

I think most traditional martial arts have ancient or medieval lineage so usually firearms arent applicable.

The exception would be krav maga, which was obviously created much later.

Although that said, my MA has incorporated firearms training scenarios to bring it up to the modern age.

i define martial arts as anything that teaches techniques that can be used in combat.

i define martial arts as anything that teaches techniques that can be used in combat.
That definition could be loosely applied to boxing or even marksmanship, which certainly are not martial arts.

i disagree, i lump boxing, wrestling, fencing, marksmanship, etc. in with martial arts.
