How to stay politically active while geographically isolated?

Living in a rural, conservative part of the US, there seem to be no leftists nearby -- what is one to do?

Of course the Internet is helpful for reading, discussions, etc., but at some point it seems important to be a part of an actual group. Perhaps one could find ways to stay involved with an organization while remotely located, but joining an organization in the first place can be difficult, as it seems necessary to attend a few meetings before one can really determine if an organization is the right one to join.

Some of us may prefer or need to live in a rural area for whatever reasons (I have no intention of moving to a more urban area), so it may not be just a temporary issue for many of us. And starting a socialism discussion group or something seems futile, if not outright physically dangerous.

Any strategies for staying involved as a rural leftist appreciated! Solidarity.
