I dont think so at least not right now. Capitalism controls politics so reform with the aid of the democrats so we can one day be a real political power.

I feel like a large section of the Democratic Party is going to need to split into a third party or else socialists are going to just keep getting sucked into it.

Here's my take on it. The two sides of the argument are either with the Eugene Debs/Norman Thomas Camp, or the Michael Harrington Camp. The Debs/Thomas side is the old school thinking that both republicans and democrats are lackeys to the Capitalist Class, and therefore forming a strong democratic socialist party is the best way to represent the wishes of the working class. The Michael Harrington side is the more modern thinking that the socialists should ally themselves with the democrats because the democrats can also successfully represent the goals of the working class and since they're a big time political party they are more likely to accomplish these means than a smaller Socialist Third party.

My head tells me go the Harrington Route, but my heart tells me to go the Debs/Thomas route. I think I'll go with my heart. I don't like the corporate direction the Dems seem to be pushing to with Obama and Hilary, my alliances lay with the Sanders/Warren types at the left wing of the party. If they could split and form a new "progressive party" that would be cool, but my deepest wish is that someday we can have a strong and separate socialist third party just like in the good old days of Debs. It would take a lot of solidarity that's probably not going to happen, but one can dream...

We should try to stay with the Dems so we can get some political clout and put through some real socialist policies (or at least try) breaking with the dems would just lead to a more divisive political landscape for Leftists and nothing would get done to boot.

I'm a Debs guy. The Democrats are not a Left wing party in any sense of the word. Now, it's possible to put through some reforms through them, but I don't think it's a very stable ground for Socialists to bet their money on. I also like Sanders and Warren.
