    The Northern Ireland Office (NIO) today published Statistical Bulletin ‘Northern Ireland Terrorism Legislation: Annual Statistics 2012/13’. This is an Official Statistics publication.

    The report details the use in Northern Ireland of powers contained within the Terrorism Act 2000, the Terrorism Act (Northern Ireland) Act 2006, the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 and the Justice and Security (Northern Ireland) Act 2007 in the financial year 2012/13.

    Key Findings

    There were 157 persons detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, 143 (91%) of whom were held for 48 hours or less

    Fifty persons detained under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 were charged with 124 offences including 4 offences of attempted murder, 17 firearms offences and 14 explosives offences

    Thirty-three persons detained under any legislation were charged with 36 offences under the Terrorism Act 2000 including 12 offences for possession for terrorist purposes (section 57) and 6 offences for membership (section 11).

    Nineteen persons detained under any legislation were charged with 19 offences under the Terrorism Act 2006 or the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 including 15 offences of preparation of terrorist acts under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006

    There was a total of 10 persons convicted under the Terrorism Act 2000, the Terrorism Act 2006 or the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 during 2012-13

    Compensation payments (including solicitors’ and loss assessors’ fees and Agency payments) totalled £52,811

    There was limited use of powers provided under the Terrorism Act 2006 and the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 during 2012-13. There were 7 premises searched under section 28 of the Terrorism Act 2006. On 25 occasions documents were examined by police during searches and on 27 occasions documents were removed for examination. There were 2 persons made subject to notification requirements under section 47 of the Counter Terrorism Act 2008
