Why the hate for Series 7 and 8?

I don't get it. Also, I never got the impression that Kochanski was meant to "replace" Rimmer, except in the sense of keeping the number of characters on-screen the same. Red Dwarf as a series has never been afraid to move in a different direction, and Series 7 and 8 reflect this.

Although Series 7 was not recorded in front of a studio audience like the previous series and the ones that followed, I still think it works better with the audience laughter rather than without it - otherwise Red Dwarf feels kind of "empty", if that's the right kind of word to use.

By the way, what does everyone think of the numbering scheme? While one could consider the Back to Earth miniseries to be a stand-in for a full season, I'm much more intrigued by the notion of Series 9 being a "lost series" as it opens up the field of discussion to all sorts of fascinating possibilities and speculation.
