Star Trek Communism

So, is the Federation - or at the very least Earth, Vulcan and other core planets - a communist society or not?

    Discuss!

They may not comply to every definition of communism, but I have noticed a couple of things:

Moneyless and demand economy - As seen in Star Trek: Insurrection, Picard points out to a 21st Centry-er' that money is not used in the future, and that things are produced only for the benefit of humanity, as opposed to profit.

Anti-Imperialism - The United Federation of Planet's famous policy "The Prime Directive" prevents the UFoP from colonialism and interfering with less-developed civilizations.

Over all, I'd say that if it isn't communist, it is at least a very left-leaning series.

I read that Patrick Stewart actually considers himself a socialist.

I was just discussing this point with my (soon to be) husband the other day. The Third World War was the traumatic event that shook humanity out of its Capitalist insanity. No money, no hunger, plenty of work, science being used to gain knowledge and not to make money or destroy...sounds pretty Communist to me. Plus, consider the imperialists all around them...Klingon, Romunlon (sp?), Cardassian. Seems pretty cut and dried to me.

    Cool!

This is a nice example of Lenin and Trotsky.

From 4:30 on Lenin makes the case for a revolutionary party. "The battle for now, comrade Trotsky, is not with the Tsar, it is with ourselves".

    So true! Again!
