Anti zapatista? Never heard of any groups like that. What are their bases?
  10. OneNamedNameLess
That's really sad to hear. There is a degree of hostility in Latin America towards the indigenous population though. Thus, it may be this that fuelled the attacks and not solely the fact of the group they are affiliated to.

There have been anti-zapatista groups for as long as there has been zapatistas. Various militias sponsored by national mexican political parties, supported of course by the mexican army and the dispossessed ranchers. The anti-zapatistas even enjoy considerable support amongst some indigenous communities. Acteal ring a bell??

Perhaps their uprising did not help. Many people perceive the miltary as valiant heroes who fight for their nation. I'm sure these feelings are present in Mexico. Oppresion aside, killing soldiersand the media representation of the events could result in anti-Zapatista feelings.

Ah, the Zapatistas. I think their attempt at Revolution was quite badly timed. A little extra Socialist agitation in the country prior to their attempt would have been a massive help, I'm thinking..... but, this may have been their last chance, I don't know. It'll be hard to tell, now that it's already happened.
