Welcome!

Hi, my name is Bill, and I'm a dialectician...

Anyway, I think we've had a need for such a group for a while on this board. Here we can talk about the dialectic among other true believers, free of interruption from Rosa and the general anti-Hegel culture on this forum.

So, yeah. Welcome to the group. I think we have a number of good issues to discuss here, from the obvious, like ways to defend DM on this site and elsewhere, to debates among different tendencies of Marxism on the subject, to educating newbies on the dialectical method. Along those lines I think it would be cool if we could get a study group going as an ongoing education process.

(But for the record, Rosa has vowed to ruthlessly tear apart all of our statements in this group either by herself on the Philosophy Forum, or with her cohorts on an "anti-dialectics" group. So if you're afraid of that happening, please leave. )

nice I see the group is set up.

I am not an expert in dialectics although I know the basics .

It would really be very interesting to do a study group here.

I have read Trotskys ABC of dialectical Materialism among other articles, pamhplets ont he issue(no books though) and unfortunately I sold the pamphlet it was included in

So it would be nice to go over the basics first and then go on to more advanced stuff, although we could do that simultaneously also .

Going over the basics first I think would be the correct approach, at least once we've got enough members to do that. Right now I'm working on a list of some basic resources on dialectics to post in a sticky as well.

Hey, I was not sure for a while if I should join the group or not, but it would be good to have a place for us to discuss dialectics without being constantly interrupted by pompous "anti-Hegelians."

First of all, we in the ISL certainly view dialectical materialism as the philosophical basis of Marxism. Every science has a philosophy behind it, consciously or not, and since Marxism is scientific socialism it had to base itself on a certain philosophical outlook.

To most revolutionaries, I think, dialectical materialism is something that must be understood, internalized, and applied - but only a few of us will take up the task of further developing the method. I don't view myself as one of those people, personally - I think there are others that are far more interested in the subject than myself. Nevertheless, I have decided to join the discussion here to both defend that method itself and to strengthen my understanding of it.

The main reason that it has taken me several days to decide whether or not to join is also the reason why I don't join the "Trotskyist" group or the "anti-imperialist" group. We all mean by dialectics different things, as I am sure we will all see, and it certainly shows in our politics. The purpose of this group for me is not only to discuss how to protect dialectics against attacks by those who oppose that method, but to also protect it from distortions by those who claim to support it.

And as for Rosa and the other anti-Hegelians - there's nothing to fear. As long we don't have to read their infinite snotty babbling, we really shouldn't care what they say.
