RevLeft FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

What is a Committed User?

Any unrestricted member who has reached 1000 posts can be promoted to the CU group by Admin team vote. Those gathering enough (3) active infractions, or are otherwise deemed not committed can and will be removed. The Committed Users Forum is not only a place for our veteran users to socialise and debate amongst themselves, they can also nominate new moderators from their ranks and use the Proposal forum to make suggestions for policy change or improvements. Proposal forum: When a proposal is made, it will be discussed for 7 days in the CU proposal forum. Provided that it isn't vetoed by the Admins, is technically implementable and receives 4+ endorsements, the BA team will then vote on the proposal for another 7 days. Proposals that aren't fourthed by a Committed User, Mod or Admin will be rejected.

Proposals that are not permitted: No policy can be retracted until after 6 months of it being implemented. Policies on retracting reactionary language, dissolving OI, dissolving the admins, reinstating the CC or otherwise altering fundamental board structure cannot be made. Threads asking for administrative action to be taken against users are prohibited, if you think that should happen report the instance to a mod/admin. CU members are however allowed to make general proposals regarding administrative policy in the Proposal forum.

CU:s usernames are displayed in blue.

What is a Mod?

A forum moderator is a member who has responsibility over the day-to-day maintenance of a board on Revleft. Each forum has a moderator assigned and it is their role to make sure that that particular forum has relevant and informative information available, is "clean" and "tidy" and that debate is continuing in a productive way. A global moderator is similar to a forum moderator, with a few key differences. Global moderators have responsibility over the day-to-day maintenance of Revleft in a broader sense. It is their role to make sure that the various forums on Revleft have relevant and informative content, that debate is continued in a civil and constructive way. They are also responsible for moderating the Learning forum collectively. Moderators can warn other members for things which the board does not approve of, move threads, close threads and delete posts at their discretion. Please note that whenever a deletion occurs, it is only a "soft" deletion and the content remains visible for all members of the Board Administration. As such, unwarranted deletions can and will be reversed. Moderators usernames are displayed in purple.

What is an Admin?

An administrator is a member who has technical responsibility over the board. They can modify and change the layout of the forums. They are responsible for the direction of the board and to maintain the boards purpose and policy. They have the controls to restrict and ban members, alter members profiles, user groups and permissions.

Administrators usernames are displayed in red.

How do I become a mod?

You must have displayed a keenness to maintain the board in a political and theoretical way and must have contributed substance to the board and have clearly defined political and anti-capitalist beliefs. A poll is started in the Board Administration forums when the time is necessary and moderators are voted on by the mods and admins. Members of the Committed Users Forum may nominate users to be included in this poll and should remember that generally speaking, only members of the Committed Users group should be nominated for new moderator positions.

Can mods and admins do what they want?

Each admin and mod has a level of trust on the board, which determines that they have the ability to act according to board policy and with discretion. Admins and mods cannot arbitrarily restrict, ban or warn members, or delete or close topics. There must be a valid reason in accordance with the guidelines, common sense or mod/admin vote.

Moderators are removed as moderator after 3 warning points and subject to the same consequences as all other members after 5.

What if I disagree with the decision of a mod or admin?

If you feel that an admin or mod has done something which you disagree with, send a private message to a forum moderator or global moderator (not the one who made the decision you dispute) outlining what you disagree with and the reasons for it. The moderator you contacted will then make a thread in the Board Administration forums to assess the dispute. This will allow an open discussion about the actions and an impartial moderator or administrator can make a decision. Alternatively if it is an admin you disagree with you can contact another admin and discuss the matter with them. If it is a mod you disagree with it is better to contact another moderator, or a global moderator and discuss it with them. Admins should only be contacted in particularly important cases. Appropriate action will be taken.

What if I don't think an admin or mod should have that position?

You can send a message to a global moderator or administrator asking for their removal and outlining your reasons why. This should only be done if there is particularly strong or substantial evidence. A moderator or admin can only be removed from their position if they are racist, sexist, homophobic, overtly religious, anti-Semitic, promoting capitalism, or use their abilities to damage the board, or arbitrarily and consistently abuse their position. Upon the receipt of your message the global moderator or administrator receiving your message will post your case in the Board Administration forum for review and discussion by the staff. Members with specific grievances against Mods/Admins who also wish to see them removed from their position are free to bring them up in a message to a global moderator or administrator if their complaint is in regards to a serious abuse of power. Serious abuses of power are defined as actions with permanent or semi-permanent effect that are clear prima facie violations of membership trust, not petty disagreements such as disputed warning points or closing of administrative threads. Your case will then be posted in the Board Administration forums for review and discussion by the staff.

Is it true that people who ask to be mods or admins don't get nominated?

This used to be the case for a long time, but the rules have since been updated. It is allowed for Committed Users to nominate themselves for vacant Moderator positions. The position of mod and admin is, however, in the end a position earned and not demanded. We understand that people want to contribute to the board, but the best way to do that is by contributing debate, resources, knowledge and help. People who do this will eventually be considered for positions of responsibility.

How are mods and admins elected?

Mods:
A successful election requires all of the following: 1) three statements of support by either committed users, mods and admins; 2) expressed, written willingness to adhere to the moderation guidelines and to not actively undermine the existence of RevLeft; 3) a successful poll in the Moderator forum.

Recall of moderators may happen at any time for cause (conscious violation of moderation guidelines, conscious undermining of the existence of RevLeft, receipt of successive infractions resulting in multiple suspensions within a six-month period, repeated violations of the social prejudice rules, etc.). All polls run one week from posting.

Admins:
A successful election requires all of the following: 1) two statements of support by other admins; 2) expressed, written willingness to adhere to the administration guidelines and to not actively undermine the existence of RevLeft; 3) a successful poll in the Administrators forum.

Recall of administrators may happen at any time for cause (conscious violation of administration guidelines, conscious undermining of the existence of RevLeft, receipt of successive infractions resulting in multiple suspensions within a six-month period, repeated violations of the social prejudice rules, etc.). All polls run one week from posting.

The Root Administrator of RevLeft (Edelweiss) reserves the right to exercise a veto of any election, re-election or recall.
