I believe that the ancestor of mine was my paternal grandmother's great-aunt. It is a somewhat distant relative. What she founded was more of a Jewish settlement than a commune but it certainly was part of a movement that laid the groundwork for kibbutzim. I'm visiting my family in Montreal this weekend so if I can find her name for you I will tell you.
I find the history of your family very interesting . I've heard about Safed and Isaac Luria, and I always felt the urge of visiting Tzfat someday... I didn't even knew there is a kibbutz there. What is your family surname?
