  1. Have you read Foner's Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men? That's a good introduction to Radical Republicanism in the 1850s and 1860s. The websites that put up books that are now public domain have been uploading all sorts of interesting texts -- first-hand accounts and contemporary writings from that time. I recommend going through some of those sites for pamphlets and articles about both the abolitionist movement and the more extreme fringes of the religious "Awakening" of the 1850s.
