To what extent do you think capitalism deskills people? In my experience, it goes further than suppressing your skills to the point where it is easier to deskill you. I think that's why I found the world of work hard to adjust to after education. How much of this is a feature of modern capitalism? I remember seeing a book once called The Intellectual Life of the British Working Classes which might address this issue. Are people more ignorant these days? Have large portions of the working class been seduced by capitalism? This thread is partly inspired by a comment on the Socialist Unity blog about journalists being deskilled so that they simply regurgitate press releases of the ruling class.

It's not capitalism, but drudgery, work.
Part of adam smiths desire for state run education was his understanding the implications of work, to help enlighten the common man despite the drudgery of work.

Perhaps capitalism has exaggerated this problem, perhaps not. I don't have a time machine. But the root cause remains work.
