Im just turning 17. My dream has always been to go to Latin America and set up my own government that would actually work and help my people for once. If not set up my own gov. then just do something that can be able to help politicaly. Im also interested in helping on a global scale. What im thinking about majoring in is either international relation and affairs, peace studies and conflict resolutions, political science and gov., and sociology. I dont know which one. Some occupations id be interested in are Foreign Service Officer, Legislator, Political Scientist, Sociologist, and Lobbyist. So what do you think I should do that would contribute more to the revolution in Latin America? All I wanna do is help my people. Imma socialist by the way.

One more question. I was reading and are foreign service officers only for the US if I study here? or can I study here but go be an officer for another country?

Thanks

The best thing you can do for the revolution in latin america (being and American) is to deter the US government from destroying popular movements abroad, and to organize here at home.

I'd say Sociology, being that in order to fix society and make revolutionary social movements work, you must have a deep understanding about how the forces behind society work. That's what I'm doing, anyway. There are courses that go in depth on how revolutions happen, from early and modern theories of revolution to close studies of their historical examples. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the more likely it is that you will succeed at making a real impact on things.

Foreign Service OfficerIf you are a foreign service officer of the U.S. your job is "to represent U.S. interests abroad", just so you know.

Are you a citizen of any Latin American nation?

I suppose you can work in some NGO...

Yeah, I think that man must understand that as officer he represent riches. I wanted long time ago also to study political science, but if you get a job (if you have connections) in foreign office, you will work for US government against socialists in latin america.
if you want to work in latin america against US, than you should check some country in lat.america to see if they accept US diplom from the school/university. but don't forget that any powerful position is reserved for children of powerful people. in any country in the world.
if you want to research revolution, of course, sociology is the best and after it you can go in latin america with help of some NGO and help people there. then you don't have anything with powerful people and you can mix yourself directly with poor.
lobbying is for me dirty job and hardly you will succeed if other side pay politicians more than your side can do it.
peace studying is nice but it is far away from reality, espoecially in latin america were governments are brutal and resistance must be brutal. to spread there pacifism would be good only for ruling class.
as you see, you must choose:)

Well couldnt I just go to Latin America and do my studies in Foreign service officer there? That way im not taught any American style of doing shit. Id really like to do that but I really dont wanna represent the U.S. Its like being a traitor to my people. But see now I do like sociology because I could learn alot but how could I take action with that information? I would need some sort of power in government wouldnt I?

My recommendation is to start smaller. Pick a fight not a continent. For example, my key interests are in areas of environmental science and economics. I took my degree in environmental Sciences and next year I'm off to Columbia to work on a project helping locals set up ecotourism ventures rather than logging/planting soya/cocaine. Find an issue you want to help with. Also look into the legality of your position, for example if you go into the US foreign services specialising in South America you arn't going to be doing anyone any favours. But if you don't have dual citizenship, you wont get clearance with any other government very easily.

Thanks for the motivation. Youll be seeing me soon :D. Im not sure you understand my dedication. I have always accomplished what I set out to do. Always. Now is no exception. If not do that, then contribute somehow.

I think you're suffering from puberty.

I don't mean that as an insult, but that's why you're so confused about what to do. I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was your age. Just chillax.

Get involved in politics locally and get some life experience in the arena.

You can be a foreign service officer (or whatever it's called, depends on the country. In essence, a diplomat) from a Latin-American country to another but usually this requires you to be a citizen of that Latin-American country.
If to be a U.S. foreign service officer requires U.S. citizenship (I think) then it's probably likewise in other countries that you need to be a citizen of the country to be able to work in their diplomatic staff.
Yes, you can also study abroad if you want and learn Poli Sci or Intl. Relations.

May I ask who do you consider your people (Do you mean Latin America, a specific Latin American country, etc?) and, re-stating my previous question, do you have citizenship of a country outside of the U.S.?

BTW, I think some sociologists can be hired as advisers to politicians or become politicians themselves...

The best thing you can do for the revolution in latin america (being and American) is to deter the US government from destroying popular movements abroad, and to organize here at home.

Also if your an american, you can work to end the prohibition of drugs which would have an incredible impact by, taking away a state tool for imprisionment of minorites and the poor and making it harder for the us gov to interfere in latin american countries.

Dont go into poli sci or sociology. They are training to be a commisar! Believe me i've was a double major in those fields once.
