A 30-Second Sample (http://www.ucpa.us/files/theme1.mp3)
I've been through much of his music to try and identify this piece, with no success. Any ideas?

Wow, that's a tough one. Can you tell us a bit about the 30 second sample and where you got it from? Do you know who recorded it etc?

I actually lifted this from the dubbed version of Eisenstein's "Oktyabr". I know for a fact it's neither the 11th nor 12th symphonies (the pieces used in most of the rest of the movie -- there is another piece, beginning shortly after the 1-hour mark and going on and off through the next 20 minutes or so, that I cannot identify generally and would appreciate assistance on, too). It's also not from his 1967 "October" (Op. 131) melodic poem for the anniversary of the Revolution. And, from what I can tell, it's also not from any of his other symphonies (though I may be wrong). The movie attributes all of the music in the movie to Shostakovich, so that's why I'm asking if it's him and what work it's from.

Hmm it's a while since I listened to Shostakovich so I doesn't ring any bell just when hearing it. And considering he was quite productive it can be quite hard to find. However my best idea would be to check out symphony No. 7 in C major, the one called Leningrad. Other than that I don't really know unfortunately.

So any luck? Im not really sure about the Leningrad symphony other than that I've seemed to remember their was parts in it that sounded a bit like cannonthunder just as in the piece you posted.

It wasn't "Leningrad". I'm thinking it might be a cello concerto of his.

Ok, good luck with the search. It can take quite some time unfortunately if you plan to listen through all of his works
