I'm just working on this essay and I could do with some source recommendations or any ideas. Any help would be much appreciated.
To what extent did working people define themselves in terms of 'class' before 1880?
Thanks,
Yautja.

In Britain that is.
Anyone?

For Britain, try:
- E. P. Thompson, The Making of the British Working Class
- R. F. Wearmouth, Methodism and the Working Class Movement of Britain 1800-1850
- H. Pelling, A History of British Trade Unions
I never read any of these books, but they are recommended by Solidarity Federation in History of Anarcho-Syndicalism, chapter on "The Radical Period" in Britain.

This in particular.
