Excellent article by Johann Hari in the Independent (05/01/09) says we are.
Pirates have never been quite who we think they are. In the "golden age of piracy" – from 1650 to 1730 – the idea of the pirate as the senseless, savage Bluebeard that lingers today was created by the British government in a great propaganda heave. Many ordinary people believed it was false: pirates were often saved from the gallows by supportive crowds. Why? What did they see that we can't?

I thought of something fucked up.
Off Somalia, pirates had seized a tanker and held it ransom and got paid off a huge sum to give it back. Pictures from the ship show hundreds of pirates on board.
Get an obsolete tanker that is about to be scrapped. Instead of oil, use a cheap, highly flammable substance. A lot of stuff would do, maybe some flammable fertilizer.
Anyway, go through the gulf real slow. Wait for the pirates to take the ship, while the small crew has escaped via real fast motorboats to a helicopter.
Once it's determined that they've taken they ship, blow the sucker so high bits of pirate are landing in Riyadh.
Fucked up indeed. I'm off to the State Dept to sell my idea.

i love the old pirates, they did some dead intresting experiments with egalitarian and libertarian comunal living, most were heavy anti-slavery and had some very cool rudemenatry socialist/anarchist ideals.
and i seem not to be the only one, here in the dutch autonomist/squater movement we see les and les anarchist symbols used on banners, flags and posters and more and more skull and crossbones apearing

The french tactic- Pay the ransom, take the hostages to safety, then go back and kill all the pirates. Well well.
