CUDDALORE: Employees of M.R.K. Cooperative Sugarmill at Sethiathope near here resorted to a wild cat strike on Saturday, affecting the functioning of the mill for most part of the day.
Employees owing allegiance to various trade unions, except one that was affiliated to the Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), expressed displeasure over “the stumbling block” posed by the latter in signing an agreement regarding promotion with the management.
Sources said that after prolonged negotiations, the trade unions arrived at an agreement with the management on promotion.
When it was scheduled to be signed on Saturday, the trade union affiliated to the VCK raked up the issue of introducing reservation in promotions.
It was the considered view of all other trade unions that reservation criterion should be applied only at the time of recruitment, while experience should be taken into account for promotion.
As the particular trade union obstructed the functioning of the mill in support of its demand, other trade unions voicing their objection to the stand taken by the former went on a lightning strike. However, following the intervention of chief cane officer Sekar, the employees withdrew their strike and resumed duty towards evening.

Good to see workers taking this action. As always wildcat strikes create a sense of strength and solidarity amongst the working class. Good luck to them.
