The placement of the Zionist movement firmly on the Right is a misnomer. When the Jews were struggling against British imperialism and racism in Europe, they had the allegiance of much of the Left. The Arab ruling classes were especially reactionary in a lot of these places--- see some of the nationalists view of Fascism and Germany.
Obviously the situation became far different after the state of Israel was actually erected, and especially after it became a bastion of US imperialism

Einstein was not a Zionist. (http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Articles4/Petersen_Einstein.htm)
"My awareness of the essential nature of Judaism resists the idea of a Jewish state with borders, an army, and a measure of temporal power, no matter how modest. I am afraid of the inner damage Judaism will sustain -- especially from the development of a narrow nationalism within our own ranks, against which we have already had to fight strongly, even without a Jewish state"
