Is it radically different? I wouldn't say so, but there are some key differences between American-style capitalism and European-style.
First off, capitalism in the US is much more unregulated, and welfare measures are, well, less than minimal. They've never been particularly potent, really, but they are less so these days than back in the 50's and up to the 70's. European capitalism is much more influenced by social-democratic measures, and the welfare state is extensive compared to what we here in the US get. Still, it has been in the process of being dismantled for the past few decades, though it might make a comeback with all the economic woes of today.
Secondly, European countries actually have some semblance of a labor movement. While labor is largely reformist in character, it is nevertheless a potent force, and no government can expect to ignore it. This labor movement is by and large weak and fragmented in the US, and has been since at least the 30's (again, moreso these days than in the past). Organized labor has nowhere near as much sway here as it does in Europe.
I'm sure some other comrades can shed further light on this issue.

due to the ussr being right at our doorstep and some near revolutions the european capitalist class was forced to make extensive concessions to the working people and they never forgot the strength of the people.
instead they gave us some scraps to appease us and slowly turned our union and political party leadership into their willing slave masters.
now that the unions and "revolutionary" party's are firmly in their control they feel secure enough to take back their concessions and are rapidly catching up with the american capitalists that never had to go through such threatening times.

Do you have any reason to be optimistic? Without any other considerations, this post is a downer

yes the people know they have been sold out by those that claim to represent them and they wont make that mistake again.
and with the economic crisis at our doorstep people will not be listening for long to those slavemasters.
all the big mistakes have been made in the past and for those willing to learn from them they offer us an incredible advantage over what the revolutionary movements in the past had plus the working class has become larger and more powerful then it ever was and because of modern communication they are able to learn of their strength (and many other lessons) through struggles on the other side of the planet without the Bourgeois being able to censor or shape that news in any way.
