I'd say we'll go to the left, but we'll model our European neighbors. It'll be a slow process overall, but I do see things like universal healthcare, a more progressive tax system & more focus on clean energy (subsidies) with a 10 year period. In terms of implementing a pure socialist or communist system would be hard to say. The CPUSA estimates they'll make a run in the year 2050, but no one knows for sure.

may I suggest that the "next" government structurally will look a whole lot like the present - that the workers' collective (of the industrial means of production and distribution) will supplant capitalism as the major source of influence over the democratic political government.

Don't let me be the cynic of the group, but I do not see any vastly more progressive governmental structures evolving out of this one. Hopefully health care will be seen as a human right within the next decade or two... but I do not see the U.S. government collapsing any time soon, and certainly not within my lifetime. There is a cultural nationalism that seems far too tied to the historic identity of "America"... which is connected intimately with deference to the "Founding Fathers", the Constitution, and a certain sense of fundamental values (however changing these values actually are, and are interpreted) that act as unifying symbols. Unfortunately for us, I think that this cultural baggage (and the national myths and ideologies that have sprung up over the centuries to support them) will limit the possibility for meaningful change (let alone revolution) for some time.

But hey, I hope I am completely wrong. I have no idea what will happen in a few decades, let alone longer.

Yes, you certainly do bring up a good point. Unless the 2012 predictions come true and the world explodes, things are going to progress slowly. That's just how America is. Personally, if the only thing that was accomplished in the next 4 years was implementing universal health care, then I would be happy since that would strike a blow to the right.

But even then, there are continuing problems with our capitalist system that may be addressed soon: http://www.dollarsandsense.org/archives/2008/1108wolff.html

it frightens me that some american comrades believe pinko socialism will be guaranteed once the neo-con flavour of capitalism fails. It could just as easilly turn fascist. In fact, i think this is perhaps more likely as a reaction to the economic onslaught of China and the general mindset of the american working class.

Specifically what do you suggest?

It's funny you mention China, a few weeks ago this libertarian-ish right wing christian fundamentalist crack pot conspiracy theorist girl told me that China is waiting for us to collapse so they can invade us and usher in a new world order. She said it's true because it was on YouTube

Anyways, to answer the OP's question:

If a collapse happens,

Hopefully: Us
Logically: Fascism

I believe that the US will evolve into "friendly" fascism before it collapses, if ever.

I honestly dont think the capitalist system is going to be replaced :(.

If it is going to fail and a new government is going to emerge I could picture a theocracy with capitalist values. I could also imagine a Neo-Liberal type nation more so, than ones we have seen before. If a socialist revolution does indeed emerge it will not be like what we have seen in the past, it will be due to conditions becoming worse and due to conflicts that will emerge in the future.

Now, onto that if the United States does fail, things are going to have to get alot worse.

It all depends on what we do in the here and now, mmmmkay?

Prophecies of doom and gloom, friendly fascism, etc... can only be entertained under current conditions. Our job is to change those conditions.

A lot of it depended on the groundwork that was laid. When capitalism failed them, some societies just linger along painfully urban America. Others descended into "friendly" fascist dictatorships, like Iraq or Zimbabwe. Others had promising moments, but ultimately reverted back, like in Argentina. And in still others, we had a very real shot, like in Spain.

What made for success or failure in these cases? Often it was how much organizing was done ahead of time (like in Spain), how much we deferred to nominally socialist leaders (like in Zimbabwe), or whether we were caught basically off-guard (like in Argentina).

I think whatever we go through, gun rights and freedom of speech will bt the first to go straight out the window.

So, either fascism or else a stalinist communism. Either way, they are not going to be welcomed by me.

So what your saying is that stalinist get the USA while the we,Other Communist's, get the rest.
