View Full Version : Greek Protesters seize TV studio

The last one was getting kind of clogged up, so I thought I'd start a seperate thread down here in Hell on the latest incident:

Protesters in Greece have interrupted a TV news bulletin to call for the continuation of mass protests over the recent killing of a teenager by police.

Ten youths briefly seized a state NET TV studio, holding banners saying "Stop watching, get out onto the streets".

Separately, youths attacked the riot police headquarters in the capital, Athens, damaging several vehicles.

Some 70 people have been injured during riots across Greece sparked by the shooting of the teenager on 6 December.

It is estimated that 400 people have been detained during the protests.

About 20 young protesters have briefly occupied a studio at Greek state television's offices as part of protests against the death of a 15-year-old boy who was shot by police on December 6....

The interrupted programme then picked up again with the presenter making no reference to the incident.

"They came peacefully. There was no force used and they asked to protest on the air about the 15-year-old's killing," a police official, who asked not to be identified, said.

Christos Panagopoulos, NET's chairman, said the protesters had violently forced their way into the studio. "This goes beyond any limit,'' he said

I thought this was interesting in the fact that before this, I was under the impression that there was no real organization to the protest movement. That, essentially, this was a bunch of kids getting out the adrenaline with neither the will or the appetite for long-term struggle.

However, these two incidents clearly denote at least some level of organization, and rioters who are getting ever-bolder and launching more inventive, effective actions.

What Leftist/Anarchist organizations exist in Greece, and is there an organization, a method for the madness, or is it all just spontaneous? I find that hard to believe, especially considering the nature of what the protests have become, and the fact that it has continued for days on end. Is the group which attacked the US Embassy a couple years ago ("The Struggle," I believe) involved with the movement?

Anyway, I'm having trouble finding info, and our news agencies aren't covering it at all (Caroline Kennedy is just so much more important). Does anybody know of a -reliably accurate- source for info?

The protest interrupted coverage of a speech by Costas Karamanlis, the country's prime minister, to parliament.

During his address, Karamanlis said: "Long unresolved problems disappoint young people, the lack of meritocracy, corruption in everyday life, a sense of social injustice.

Stick a fork in him. He's done.

Greeks are awesome. I wish I could do that in a Bush Speech...the possibilities would be endless!

(If someone who's more technologically competent than I could do the whole Video YouTube thing in this thread, I'd appreciate it greatly)

I'd have to disagree, Historically Greek Cops have had balls of steel, worse than LAPD and Mexican Cops.

in term of casual arrrestation and interrogation maybe, but right now, its just surprising thei didnt get more agressive than that. hell, i am even more surprised the governement didnt decreted the martial laws and called the army.

if i was a cops, and that protester would throw molotov at me, i would start using live amunition for sure.

if i was a cop and that some dudes where taking over the national tv station, i would send the swat team in no time

The police are being relatively light-handed because this was all sparked by one of theirs shooting a kid in cold blood. They don't want to risk any more fatalities, though it appears they've already got people out trying to scare people with guns, as evidenced by the shooting of a 16 year old yesterday in the hand.

As for info...
