Do something incredibly athletic. You'll ve using parts of your lung you never thought you had. Go on a run through a forest or something. Coughing up phlegm is a good sign.
As for staying off, I have no idea, I can't even do it.

I started smoking when I was 13 and never made a habit out of it. I think I smoke ten cigarettes a month.
Lucky me.
Anyway, good luck quitting! Make sure you get lots of exercise (not necessarily going to the gym, but try to take the stairs (maybe twice) and such).

Find a new habit, it only takes like a month to get rid of the nicotence withdrawl symptoms usually, but then the habit of smoking will take a few months to break. So start doing something everytime you want to smoke. (eat a piece of hard candy perhaps)

You could get a nicotine inhaler to help with a gradual reduction in intake and withdrawl symptoms :)

everytime you have the urge to smoke, take a shot of some nasty liquor like cheap-ass vodka. This will help you associate smoking with a bad taste and general discomfort.
And be sure keep it at one shot so you don't get drunk :D

Patches, strong strong will power. Go to a support group, they work well. You don't have the NHS over there so I don't know where you'd go but it helps if you do it with other people.

Stop and don't start again. Absolutely resign yourself to the fact that you will never have a cigarette again. Don't even lft yourself consider it.
People have been more addicted than ou and quit by sheer force of will. Anything else only makes you think that you're much weaker than you really are.

I gave up when I had a really heavy cold a couple of years ago, as the effects of smoking were hurting my body a lot more than the withrawal of nicotine did. When I started to feel better, fom the cold, I found that I had hardly any craving for nicotine.
Not sure how that helps though, I would hardly recommend going out and catching a cold

I agree with the absolute affirmation bit; something Ilearned distance running--you never allow yourself to think about quitting, only think about finishing the run and/or whatever you need to distract yourself with.
A friend of mine kept carrot sticks in empty cigarette boxes so they tasted nicotineish, and there would be something besides smokes there when he reached for it.

hey man you can do it, ive been smoking for about 5 years or so now and you really should stop now(if its only been 5 months and you already want to quit thats good) trust me it will get harder do stop if you dont now. while everyone can offer good advice(as they have in this thread) but when it comes to quitting it's different for everyone. some people can quit cold turkey, others need to cut it down gradually. a good trick for cutting down is everytime you want a cig make it a habit to wait some odd amount of time before actually having on. ( like I want a cig now, I'll wait ten minutes, oh well i'll just wait more) developing habits like that can at the least cut your intake and start making it easier. I feel your pain with the nicotine gum/patches the truth is nothing will adequetly fullfill your need for having that smoke in your lungs, some people even end up taking prescriptions to help them quit, how many smokes you have a day? if its still at five months i doubt you'll need prescriptions. Just remember its been done before and you can do it, and tell me how it goes and maybe i'll give it another try myself! good luck man. oh and as for you lombas....I envy you

I trashed the unnecessary stuff in this thread. If you're going to troll, at least make sure it's funny.

I am currently a cigarette smoker (going on five or six years now I think), and a rather well-educated one in regards to the realities of cigarette smoking and the effective methods of quitting. Here's what I'll say:
Basics:
1) Exercise daily. Run, swim, box, whatever.. it doesn't really matter so long as you are engaging in daily aerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise (lifting weights, etc...) is not as important as aerobic exercise (though if you want to do this as well on top of aerobic exercise, that's groovy).
Why do this? Aerobic exercise releases endorphins which produce a natural feeling of well-being. Aerobic exercise also demands usage of your lungs which have been damaged by smoking - this, in turn, will cause your body to expel much unwanted mucous, etc...
2) Drink lots of water. Lots. Your body can process one liter of water and hour. This isn't to say drink a liter of water an hour, but it is to give you an idea of how much is a lot.
Why do this? Smoking places great demands upon your liver by necessitating that the liver cleanse the toxins and carcinogens inhaled through cigarette smoke. Drinking water helps remove impurities, and is just plain good for you.
Other methods:
- Acupuncture
- Association: every time you desire a cigarette, smoke a joint. DO NOT take shots, as you have probably become accustomed to smoking while drinking and this will not help you. Marijuana is not addictive, and one joint ought to last you a couple hours whereas one cigarette will only last twenty minutes or so.
- Medication: nicotine patches, gum, etc... plenty of information is available online.
- Hand/mouth activities: toothpicks, carrots, regular (sugar-free) gum, pens, etc... anything you can use to pacify your conditioning for the hand-mouth cigarette association.
Be creative. You have the ability to quit, but how is up to you.
Whatever you do, do not smoke that "one" cigarette. Draw, paint, write poetry, read, play games, run, whatever you need to do.
You'll be fine. Stay healthy.
