We have a small tourist island in the English channel. Then two capitalists who are owning most of the tourist installations.

The two capitalists wanted to have 9 allies elected into the local parliament, but only got two, so now they are punishing the island for not adhering to their ideas.

How big is the awareness about this in Britain?

Strangely enough, this seems to be the last showdown between capitalism and feudalism, in some really weird way.

This story was on BBC's ten o'clock news the other day and has also been in many newspapers.

So yeah, i think that people who watch/read the news will know about it.
Really just is another blow for capitalism, the billionaire brothers that owned the hotels/restaurants on the island were asking for a democracy, but when the people didn't vote for their "approved" candidates they stropped off and closed many of the hotels etc. This caused 100 jobs to be lost (out of the 600 people living on the island).
