Prior to this election, neoliberals enjoyed a 125 - 0 advantage in the Quebec National Assembly. With the election of Omar Khadir of Quebec Solidaire, there are now 124 neoliberals and 1 social democrat (and a real one...Not a Socialist International sell-out type).

By Alberta standards, they're all 'socialists'

I'm not sure if the newly elected Quebec "leftist" is a real "social-democrat." His political group is focused more on "social issues" (green issues, feminism, etc.) rather than on class. Being a real "social-democrat" means being like those for the old post-war consensus in Europe, for Chavez, or for "Scandinavian socialism."

Amir Khadir won not Omar Khadir who is the Canadian child soldier in Gitmo. And Quebec Soldiare is a leftist united front workers party supported by various communists and socialist groups.

Quebec Solidaire reminds me of the "broad left" parties have been tried in parts of Europe, kind of like RESPECT, and maybe to a lesser degree Enhedslisten in Denmark (though Enhedslisten stems from a more explicitly socialist position.) I'd probably put them with the broader alter-globalist movement; doing good work, but not advocating explicitly class-based politics. Nevertheless, I consider this a good development, and would support QS at least for the time being.

Wow, an Iranian doctor who's more of a new-age hippy than any sort of social activist has won a seat in the Quebec "National" Assembly!

I for one won't be hitting the streets to celebrate. Also, I wouldn't call the ADQ "neo-liberals". They're quite conservative.

FYI, being "neo-liberal" means being economically conservative. ;)

Neoliberal means laissez faire, which means, privatize and free monopoly trade and control.
