I continued my and Spetnaz conversation here as it was a bit off-topic in the oil-tread.
May be you could write a short blog and post it here on how social democratic came to Europe and how it is being destroyed now.I'll see what I can do in the near future. I dislike doing such things without sourching them extensively and I don't really have the time to do the research at the present time.
In short for Norway; The main factors that would play in would be proximity to the USSR and a very strong union LO (wage-earners organisation) with very close ties to the main party AP (the workers party) since the WW2, AP was orininally a communist party the first time they got power. Since the LO has always been quite strong they have always been able to excert a strong pressure on the government or call out nationwide strikes. The oil money didn't really kick in untill after the wellfare state was already well underway.
In the 90ties there were never really any new initiatives and then everything always turn right as there are always pressure from the government.
Unfortunately I really need to do some research to cover the subject decently. I've been meaning to make an article on how the wellfare state developed in Norway for a while, I'll see if I can get to start working over the christmas, I recon The worker's movement's (http://www.arbark.no/h0401.htm#vismaned) archive has some books of interest.
And do one on Canada wannabe social democratic and how it is being destroyed .
Lacking knowledge on Canada.
I would also like to see a blog on why industries nations are less religious and why the exception in the US is very religious and conservative from old school of thought.I would say that in most Industrious countries (though, my girlfriend who studies Geography tells me the the I- and U-countries view is going out of fashion in the academia) have a more well-educated populace and a more well-off populace. In the US people are generally less materially well off, and they have had the winner-effect from being a world power.
Not to mention no independant media to speak off, the constant propaganda and no visible ways to change things for the better.
In the US the only visible part of the political spectrum is the extreme right and the less extreme right, so I would guess that causes despair when people have no viable option of changing their present situation. So that would cause more people to turn to religion for comfort.
