View Full Version : Marx & Engels: The alleged gay affair? - let me lose, please

personal preface: I'm not a message board troll. I'm not trying to induce upheaval. Albeit a capitalist, I write this off as a low-point in right- wing propaganda.

I was reading an article the other day on the net that proposed Marx and Engles were involved in a homosexual affair with each other. I though it was a pointless joke, but then a teacher at my high school agreed that this has been a long assumed issue. I am personally impartial, as sexual preference does not yield any specific influence over their theory, but I can’t help but be a little curious as to whether or not there is any truth behind this, or if it is just a blatant right-wing lie. Does anyone know anything about this?

I can’t find the initial link anymore…when I do, I’ll post it.

I have not heard that, but if they were, who cares? Some people are gay and that is their choice. And if you are "right", that does not demote Marx or Engals in my book.

I've never heard that. But I agree with LevTrosky, it doesn't matter.

Well, I would be "cool" with it if they were, but I disagree when people say it doesn't matter. It's history, these are 2 very important historical icons to me, I would like to know if they were porking each other while on breaks from writing the Manifesto.

I'm sure it's not true, but I would just like to know, therefore it "matters" (not really) to me.

I thought Karl Marx had a wife or something?

Oh yeah now I remember, Karl Marx actually wrote a poem to this woman he fell really in love with, I have read it before, but I don't know where it is now on the internet.

it may matter, but it shouldn't

You may like to know, but it has no effect on their theories.

first I read here that he was supposed to have banged his maid and fathered a child with her, now he is gay? Maybe he was bi-sexual then. I am sure it was common back then, just a very private thing though.

like I said, it doesn't impact the theory. As far as I know, this was an affair, so it is still quite possible that he was married. Infidel!

Reminds me of Lenin.

you know i've never heard anything to that effect before, but come to think of it, it could be the greatest homosexual pairing in history.

urban rubble! you used the word "pork!" that's like, my absolute favorite slang word for sex in the whole wide world. sorry, i just had to get that out of the way.....

Ah, the sweet smell of sexual scandal...

When you stop and think about it, it's pretty difficult to figure out who is "porking" who right now...unless you're a participant or watching.

Marx's wife was named Jenny (there's a street in Germany named after her) and she was politically active in her own right, handling a great deal of correspondence for Marx, working with refugees from political persecution in Europe, etc. She gave birth to, I believe, eight children...four of whom died at birth, one died at the age of eight, and three daughters survived into adulthood. (That rate of childhood morbidity was not at all uncommon in 19th century England.)

Engels had two mistresses, sisters, but he was evidently monogamous, taking up with one only after the death of the other.

It has been reported that Marx also fathered a child on Jenny Marx's maid...but I don't think there is any real evidence to support this contention.

Considering the number of enemies that Marx and Engels made, it seems improbable that the chance to accuse them of "un-natural acts" (as gay sex was called then)would have been missed, had there been even a half-way plausible excuse available.

Thus, they were almost certainly not gay.

An amusing footnote: in the early 1970s, the gay caucus of a Trotskyist group in the U.S. published a pamphlet on gay liberation--the cover showed Marx and Engels walking together...holding hands. :cheesy:

HA ! That's funny. Anyway, I think it would be cool if Marx was a flamer, they could use some relevant historical icons.

Don't all jump on me for saying flamer, it's just a joke.

I can't believe people have taken this tripe seriously.

While were at it I suppose we can bring up the old 'Hitler was Jewish' argument.

Dear oh dear.

No he wasn't. There isn't a shred of evidence to suggest he was.

And no, heresay and wishful thinking doesn't count as evidence.

Lenin had a wife and mistress. His wife was merely a public image.

Marx-from what I’ve read on this forum-was supposed to have father children with his maid, all while he was married. And the rumor him and Engles were lovers doesn’t make things look too good. If they were true then it is immoral, but I don’t listen to rumor.

Sorry I took so long to respond. I forgot about this post.

So cheating on your wife is NOT immoral?

I think you mistook my statement to mean an insult against the homosexual aspect of it all. But it wasnt, cheating on your wife with a man or woman is immoral.
