STOP THE BNP

COUNTER PROTEST

10AM, CHURCH ST (BOLD ST END), LIVERPOOL
BRING BANNERS, PLACARDS AND PEOPLE!
called by Liverpool UAF and Liverpool LMHR groups, supported by North West UAF

On Saturday 22nd Nov 2008, 12 members of the BNP were arrested in Liverpool city centre while handing out leaflets spreading their message of racism and hate ( racism cuts both ways leaflets) . The fascist BNP are planning to hold a demo in Liverpool this Saturday 29 November and are asking their activists to bring more leaflets !
We are organising a protest to stop the BNP spreading their racist lies in Liverpool. We are calling on everyone to unite against them and come to Liverpool and oppose the BNP !

Dear Supporters [sic; everybody we have the e-mail of],

We are asking UAF supporters in the North West to join this protest against the BNP in Liverpool this Saturday 10am. Please make every effort to attend and bring union banners, friends and colleagues.

Is it just me or is the language the UAF uses slightly off-putting?

Not many news reports out there, one said that there was 100 to each side.

100 people in Liverpool? I have not been to scouse land in many a year but that seems....

not great... lets just say not great and leave it at that.

Did UAF actually invite anyone else to their little shindig?

well the racist bastards are gloating all over the net about how they held a rally in central liverpool and outnumbered the 'reds'.

Dont look like a massive winner to me, but I could be wrong, I wasnt there.

How did it go?

dunno wasnt involved but
so say the SWP (http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/art.php?id=16601)

Some 300 people came to a rally to demonstrate against the fascist British National Party (BNP) in Liverpool on Saturday of last week.

The protest had been called to oppose BNP plans to distribute racist leaflets in the city.

The anti-fascist demonstration was called by Liverpool Unite Against Fascism (UAF) and Liverpool Love Music Hate Racism.

It attracted a broad range of people, including students and local trade unionists.

Many at the anti-Nazi protest were shocked by the behaviour of the police.

Senior officers told the protest organisers that the BNP had decided not to turn up. This information was false.
On hearing the police claims many protesters assumed that they had won and dispersed.

Others, including UAF speakers, argued that they should not trust the police’s assurances and should instead march down to where the fascists had been due to meet.

A group of around 100 anti-fascists attempted to reach the point where the BNP had assembled. But the police refused to let them through and threatened to arrest leading activists.

Protesters who did manage to get near the Nazis reported seeing around 50 fascists there, including BNP leader Nick Griffin, surrounded and protected by the police.

The police allowed the Nazis to distribute leaflets but penned in those protesting against them.

The fact that the fascists were outnumbered and challenged by their opponents is important.

But the events also show that the police cannot be trusted to play an honest role in such protests.

Mass movements against fascism in the past – from Cable Street to the Battle of Lewisham – have succeeded by defying police attempts to protect the Nazis.

Those lessons need to be relearned by today’s movement against the BNP.

Why do they always complain about the fucking police. When have the police ever been genuinly helpful? Never. So why act all suprised when they're pricks?

This is why i'm pretty glad you're no longer the Antifa mod.

If you're going to go on your vile little tirades against the 'great enemy' the SWP, UAF, STWC....at least get some evidence to back them up.

i dont think my own personal opinions of the UAF got in the way of my modding, please dont take cheap shots,

i even publicised their actions on a few occasions, i praised them for what they did at Leeds,
at RWB you cannot deny they fucked up...

I don't know enough about the UAF to criticise them (hence why in another thread all i said was "pile of wank") but the SWP piss me off.

What did they cock up doing at RWB?

Killface, just because you're a member of the Federation of British Hairdressers, there's no need to be so catty.

at first set up a seperate protest from the local one, then on the actual protest made sure they were in pride of place for a photo op. due to working with the police, did little more than chant then tried to do a half arsed march through the police lines they had just collaborated with, which they incedentally failed at,

basically made us on the left look like clueless fools,

Personally it would have been nice to actually see the 750 people the police restricted the march to show up.
