Hey everyone, I wanna start going back to school but i`m having difficulty in finding a program. So I have come here to see what my fellow revleft comrades can recommend!!!
I was thinking Political Science or even Sociology. What do you guys think of these? The problem I hear all the time about Sociology is that you wont find any jobs with this. Is it true? Also, is Sociology a girl`s program? Not that there`s anything wrong with that, but i would hate for my buddies to ridicule me for it. (sorry for sounding immature, comrades.)
So, what are the benefits of these two Majors? And are there any other program you can recommend?
Thanks

Well, it depends on what you want, and the biggest thing is what you like, and I don't really know you, so take any advice with a grain of salt, but...
If you're looking for a decent paying stable job in these times, I would recommend something like engineering or pharmacy. Also, check out college programs as well. Infrastructure is booming right now, so Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technologist would be a good bet (although I don't know what things will be like wherever you live in 4 or 5 years years when you're done)
If you want something interesting, I would recommend Labour Studies (NOT Labour Relations or Industrial Relations... there is a BIG difference). I've taken a few courses, and they go into some economics and some history, all from a working class perspective. And I hear it has a better than average rate for finding jobs in your field compared to other arts programs like sociology and such.

Well, I know a guy taking Women's Studies, so it shouldn't really matter...
But a little more seriously, what would you rather be in: a class with lots of attractive girls or a sausagefest like engineering?

Read up on the courses and do what interests you more.

Well considering my goal is to major in history and minor in political science I might be slightly biased answering this, but I say take political science. :P If you major solely in political science it can be a pretty limited field, but if you combine it with something else it should be fine.

political science seems to be the obvious one because you can come out of the course with promising job prospects

Hey thanks for the reply guys...
hhhmmmm I'm gonna look into that Labour Studies it doesn't sound too bad. I've looked at those Engineering courses before but it'll never work, my math is so frickin limited...god i hate math.
Thanks again

I could never be a political science major, the field is dominated by a very pro-capitalist, pro-political perspective. Sociology would be a little better, but they're both bourgeois academic disciplines. Don't plan on using those degrees to land decent jobs either. Jobs related to these fields are typically in academia and require a PhD.
I plan on sticking with the sciences.

I'm in international development. Which is really a great program. check into it if you can.. much like poli sci however much more critical of organizations. Most of my classmates are very left leaning.

Now now... I'm a male who is a sociology major. It is the only class that consistently gets me excited. FoB is right that it is a bourgeois academic, but that doesn't stop me from saying that Marx wrote the most detailed and accurate sociological perspective up to date.

I'm a Social Sciences major in my university, but my minor is in sociology.
As far as jobs, you can become a teacher, social worker, counselor, probation officer (not suggested) and several other things.
The College of Liberal Arts, which is where my major resides, is flooded with women. Me, being a straight guy, thats not a bad thing at all!
And, even better, you might find a girl that agrees with what you think!
Sociology definitely keeps me interested and excited. I knew beforehand that it wasn't something that was gonna land me in a high-paying job, like engineering or architecture, and it has less units and courses than these (because my school is like one of the best in the nation in engineering so it focuses far more on that).
Good luck and make the choice that feels right for you. That's the best advice anyone can give you.

It's not the money that matters. It's the interest in the work that you're doing that matters. ;)
I think it's just one of the little things that separates us from Capitalists. They always seem to go after the jobs that get them the most money...
