View Full Version : Good, chill wake-up music

I'm a huge noob to electronic music, but I really want to find more slow tempo stuff that I can use to wake up and/or nurse a hangover. :p
I've heard a lot of recommendations for Air (see? told you I was a noob) but in what I've heard from them their vocals are too girly, or in some way get on my nerves, I can't quite articulate it.
M83 has a few good songs but they're not quite exactly what I'm looking for. Daft Punk is definitely cool, but I wouldn't call most of their stuff exactly "chill".
I definitely like a few MGMT songs for this purpose of waking up, and I've always been pretty crazy about this song from Radiohead, "Meeting In The Aisle":

Plus the entirety of Kid A.
Whenever I ask people this, they start recommending Portishead or Sigur Ros or whatever they think is chill and good to wake up to. But I don't want trip hop and I don't want space rock, I'm specifically looking for stuff that is dance/techno-y, only with a much slower tempo, and I don't care if it has lyrics or not but the singer's voice can't get on my nerves. When I'm home sick or tired or hungover I usually listen to dub, so that should give you an idea about the kind of tempo.
Edit: Oh yeah, another perfect example--if you go on itunes and search for the album Invol2ver, I love the song "Flesh".

Personally, I rock Slayer's Reign in Blood or hardcore techno when I wake up in the morning.
No chilled out bullshit for me!

Pink Flag is a great album for mornings
I usually get very mild hangovers that don't make me sensitive to sound

I win. Is that jump possible? If so, if I did that jump I'd feel like a demigod.

I just heard this song called "Clever Mind" by The Mighty Bop. Amazing. But unfortunately not on youtube.
Taig: Boards of Canada are awesome, thanks.

Fear not! I am here to help!
I suggest the following:
Adani & Wolf, Ali Di Meola, Bonobo, Broken Social Scene, DNTEL, Mazzy Star, mum, My Bloody Valentine, Neu!, The Orb, Robin Guthrie, Slowdive, Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto, Steve Reich (Music for 18 Musicians), Tortured Soul, Yellow Magic Orchestra
If you have to pick one, I suggest The Orb... or mum.
Personally, though, I wake up to Sun O))) every morning.
edit: If Air's girly vocals bother you, I suggest their 'Virgin Suicides OST' album. It's (mostly) instrumental.

I'll second Brian Eno.
And suggest Neu! and Tangerine Dream.

great album, I usually hate that kind of music but Belle and Sebastian are just great and that album in particular.
I also uphold Comrade Mantis' astute musical recommendations for glorious proletarian auditory experience

Lots of awesome replies to the thread so far, like Boards of Canada, MBV etc. But, the absolute pinnacle of chillout electronica is without a doubt "Bent".

Actually, I wake up to Sublime and Explosions in the Sky for chillout music, but if you want electronica, go for Bent definitelly!

I would suggest Stereolab, also. If you don't know them they are leftist, as a bonus. Here's the only pop song ever written about the business cycle

We need more good socialist pop :(. I hate punk and metal
