Yeah, its essay time again :(

I'm doing a question on comparing modern Russia and the historical USSR. I think I've covered most of the obvious angles (differences/similarities in economic and political models) but I'm really looking for some less conventional lines of analysis; I'm quite keen to get a Marxist perspective in at some point so any thoughts would be more than appreciated.

This may be something you can tie in with the points you've already made on economic systems, but you should also try to mention the impacts of the collapse of the USSR on the standard of living. The most obvious thing to focus on in this respect is the drastic fall in life expectancy - In 1989, average male life expectancy was 64.2 years but since then it has dropped to 57.6 years as a result of various factors including the collapse of the public health system, as well as social problems such as a rise in abusive alcohol consumption and a growing AIDS epidemic.

Even if this document (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeK6spOIVro&feature=PlayList&p=975077C25304FA14&index=0) is done by a most probobly bourgeoise professor, it still covers a lot off the injustice, poverty and AIDS problems in Russia. It's a 6 chapter long document entirely focusing on these things, I'd recommend you watch this to obtain any additional information on the subject.

Quite a big one actually.

Anyway, you already have this difference?:
USSR: planned economy
Russia: capitalist economy

I almost agree with you:

USSR: planned capitalist economy
Russia: market capitalist economy

Learned much from it, hope it helps. ^_^

Cheers for this guys. Very quick question - does anyone know what is the current situation regarding land ownership in the Federation?

Only Russian citizens can own land, anything specific?

Well it was more to do with accessibility than ownership; Russian citizens may be able to own land but isn't it quite difficult to actually do so?

USSR: A so called Socialist country, just Capitalism with some health care, object of hatred and embarrassment to many leftists. It starred in the book Revolution Betrayed by Leon Trotsky.

Russia: A country that just comes out, says its capitalist, has no healthcare, has a kick ass Prime Minister (Vladdy Putin, ex-KGB agent)

All depends on how rich you are I suppose...

USSR: planned...
There was in the USSR's government such as "GOSCOMTZEN' (The price forming state committee) which spyed on market demand and guoted a price as determined like planned price.

USSR: planned capitalist economy

Perhaps "planned state capitalist economy" , but i don't agree completely, "socialism with capitalist mode of production" rather more, ... and it's a bit complicated then simply a "couple of words"
