What do you guys think that the role of students in unionizing their city's work force ought to be?

I think that students are far too often too alienated from the working class (even though the majority will likely soon be a part of it), so one way in which they could be active while they go to school could be to initiate unionizing efforts to local industry.

The major problem with this however is that it could be seen as students interfering with the working class and perhaps since they are indeed alienated from workers in so many cases that those efforts would be futile and acted out very poorly.

Thoughts?

This is a bit of a false paradigm you're creating.
Alot of students are workers.

But more to the point: no one should be organizing workers, we support workers organizing themselves.
In practice, alot of this manifests as self-organization in the workplace (e.g. autonomous unions, or branches of unions like the IWW, CNT, etc).
The unionised workers support unionising un-unionized workers! But no one can force it on them.

You should start by organizing your own workplace.

And if you're a student who doesn't work, organize in your school, and propagate ideas of self-organization.

I'm facing the same problem. I have one simple question: How does one go about organizing a workplace? I have absolutely no experience in this (and apparently neither do my co-workers) and any help would be great.

On edit: any opinions on the SEIU or UNITE-HERE? Any other similar unions?
