I've been told that it's easy to back up DVD's--"just use DVD shrink."

However, I have an eee pc with xandros now, and am not sure that would work. . . and also, I was never able to make it work with suse or windows. I am climbing a pretty steep technology learning curve, just now; this is only my second year of having any frequent access to a computer.

If anyone could give some very beginner friendly instructions on

-What kinds of encoding and encrypting are used for various media? How does one get around these?

-Specific links and advice for what software (and/or even what hardware) is best to use, how, and why.

It would be very appreciated. :)

When you say "DVD", you mean a "DVD with a movie on it, like what you would buy at a store" as opposed to a "DVD that I burnt a bunch of stuff onto to back it up" yes?

In that case, I have no idea. Sorry.

Actually, I would suggest that this website is completely the wrong website to ask, you would be far better off going to a forum that specialises in such things.

For example, this person had the same sort of question: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f3/copy-protection-dvd-backup-linux-109626/ (no good answer though).

Anyway, ask on eeeeeeeeepc forums as well (do a search, e.g. http://forum.eeeuser.com/ ).
