I find it difficult to favour any of his first eight albums over the others as they are all phenomenally brilliant. I can't think of another artist who has produced such a sustained output of sheer classics.

If Bob didn't exist, we'd have to invent him.

Love that album, too. So stark. So political.

Bob Dylan is a musical genius. I know it's a bit cliche, but my favorite song by him is Hurricane.

Does anyone like some of his later stuff like Things Have Changed, Everything Is Broken, Not Dark Yet, Gotta Serve Somebody etc.?

I think they're pretty good as well.

Some of the music he wrote, though not the lyrics which are just a collection of Christian clichés, during his religious phase is among the best he ever made. And it pisses me off, that because its Christian people think that its just shit, it isn't.

The best unappreciated Dylan song is definitely "In The Summertime" from Shot of Love. Such a classic. "Watered-Down Love" is also great.

Who here's read Chronicles: Vol I? It's got some great lines about American pop culture (and how much it sucks)

He made a lot of good music in the past but everything that came out after he became a "born-again Christian" in the 1970s is horrible.

Have you all heard John Lennon's "Serve Yourself" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXd25Jqi7G0) (a response to Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody")?

He made a lot of good music in the past but everything that came out after he became a "born-again Christian" in the 1970s is horrible.

Not all his post-70's music is religious though, he even recanted the religious crap later on:

Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don't find it anywhere else. Songs like "Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain" or "I Saw the Light (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Saw_the_Light_(Hank_Williams_song))"—that's my religion. I don't adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists, all of that. I've learned more from the songs than I've learned from any of this kind of entity. The songs are my lexicon. I believe the songs.[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan#cite_note-Newsweek97-4)

In an interview published in The New York Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_York_Times) on September 28, 1997, journalist Jon Pareles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Pareles) reported that "Dylan says he now subscribes to no organized religion."[229] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dylan#cite_note-228)

The album Modern Times from 2006 is pretty good, especially the songs Thunder On The Mountain and Things Have Changed.

Yes he did, it's called Neighbourhood Bully.

In terms of the actual music, a lot of it is better than most of the music he was making back in the 60s. Street Legal (1978), which was one of the first Dylan albums with hints of conversion (it was released just before his Gospel tour) has some great songs on them, as does Slow Train Coming and Slow Train Coming (I don't really like much from Saved, thats a bit shit), and they are certainly better than Self Portrait, which is a rubbish. And his post religious stuff, such as Time out of Mind is great.

Yes, and the sad irony is that Dylan's song is far in a way better. While Dylan was writing awful cliché lyrics at least the song sounds good. With about two exceptions, and Serve Yourself isn't one of those exceptions, everything lennon made post-Beatles was dire.

Start with the first and go through them in chronological order, up to Blood On The Tracks.

'Neighbourhood Bully' from the 'Infidels' album was perceived by some as being pro-Israel. Dylan himself denies this.

i didnt like 'tombstone blues'. Good lyrics, but annoying instrumentals.

Yeah, i'm sure his left wing fan base had nothing to do with that. :glare:
