Lets be more specific, this is not a problem in Africa, this is a problem in South Africa. Poeple are very ignorant or just want to believe in something in their desperate plight, it is quiet disgusting, this is also the cause of the many child rape cases in the Western Cape, and I mean children as in 8 month old babies. The government has put alot of resource into educating the poeple, with huge commercials and even our president stating that sex with a virgin is not a cure for aids (but then he also says alot of things). Its just a very bad situation.

This is what you get when child rape is not brutally snuffed out the moment it begins to surface. Any individual in South Africa caught for this crime must be immediately placed in a cell for the duration of their pitiful lives. No visitors. No medication. You feel it's okay to not only rape a child but to actually condemn them to death as well? They are lucky that out of principle I don't believe in capital punishment (unless during times of revolution) because these people deserve execution.

this myth is probably caused by people confusing the fairly obvious fact that if you only have sex with 1 person who only has sex with you then you will be unlikely to catch HIV, with thinking that having sex with virgins is a cure.

There needs to be more education in sub-sahara Africa as to AIDS prevention, there is a common social attidude that it is the womans fault if anything bad happens, so if a married man sleeps with a prostitute and catches HIV and infects his wife, he thinks his wife is a prostitute because he won't recognise that it's his fault.

Uganda tried to solve the problem of education in the 80s when they were the worst country in the world for HIV infection, since then infection rates have dropped dramatically.

However, rates of other STDs in Africa are falling whereas rates of HIV are increasing indicating that the pandemic is more likely to be caused by unclean medical instruments.
