Here is a Newsmax story that evaluates the possible weaponization of the orthopox virus know as monkeypox. It is know that Russia developed this strain in the world's most extensive bioweapons program. Naturally occuring cases have been known to exist in Africa, usually caused by exposure to infected animals. Some weapons inspectors are worried that Iraq had been developing this in addition to the camelpox they were known to be working with. Recently, there has been an outbreak in Wisconsin. Coincidence or consequence? What materials do you suppose Saddam had been maniufacturing in his mobile production facilities?

What do you think? I think the determination of whether or not this outbreak is linked to WMD should be assessed based upon the rate of human to human transmission. Although recent cases in Africa have demonstrated higher rates of human to human transmission, it is suspected that the genetic framework of the disease may have been altered in order to achive a much higher K-factor. If this thing spreads like wildfire, we may be able to make the determination that this was a deliberate act against the United States. This story is definitely one to watch, as it represents probably the most significant threat, which our intelligence community has been working day and night to prevent. This could get interesting.

Think I am being paranoid? The United Press International also reported this on June 9th. (http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=07062002-064019-1942r)

I don't see anything in these articles that represents alarm. I know you're anxious to pin anything you can on Iraq so that you don't look silly, but c'mon. I'm also curious as to why you think these conservative news sources are any more trustworthy or factual than the left press that other members here quote. (The debate about the Iraq WMD erroneous intelligence comes to mind)

I think that jumping to conclusions about monkeypox being used as a WMD by Iraq on U$ soil is laughable. This quote from the CDC even points to rodents being collected years ago for testing.

"Animal Studies
Local trappers were asked to capture and bring to the study veterinarian wild animals, especially rodents, squirrels, and nonhuman primates, for which the trappers were paid as an incentive. Animals were processed in a field laboratory (12), identified to genus and species, and bled for serum. Representative voucher specimens of each animal were preserved in 10% formalin for definitive identification."

As far as the reasoning that it has never existed on this continent, the same could be said for dengue fever in cuba, but you conservatives would never admit to biological warfare committed by the U$ would you. So in that line of reasoning, I guess you would just have to admit, that sometimes diseases just show up right? Look at Canada. I don't think they ever had a case of SARS or Mad Cow before did they?

This is hilarious. Yes, I bet Saddam manufactured monkey pox (which is rarely fatal) and dropped it off on about 20 people in the MidWest. Nevermind the fact that he is busy avoiding capture and before that, fighting a war.

Why would he use this virus ? It's not even really a threat. Plus, they already determined that it came from Prairie Dogs.

Do you also think Al Qaeda sent us the West Nile Virus ? DAMN IT !! They've even gotten the mosquitos to become terrorists !!

"we are much, much smarter than you."

That's the funniest thing I have ever heard a leftwinger say. Should I start posting word problems again?
