in saying that people used to believe that Capitalism would never work? if so could any of you give me a reliable link or source to give to the person I am talking to? so they know I am not just making it up?

I remember reading about something like this in a text by Marx - the class struggles in France (I think).
something about in feudal france, england, etc. capitalism being synonymous with chaos and so on.

Cool :) now I know for sure that their was some disagreement about whether Capitalism would work.... now I just need some sort of link lol.

The idea of capitalism as a coherent economic system was not developed until after capitalism had emerged and people were able to document it through observation. However in Feudal times there were certainly progressive movements pushing for change and the changes demanded generally involved the abolition or mitigation of feudalism and proposals for alternatives looked a lot like what we would recognise as early capitalism. Those who opposed such change certainly said it would never work.
