Was the neo-liberal movement of the 1980s simply a reactionary response to the events of the '60s and '70s?
I'd also be interested in some links about the effects of Thatcherism and Rogerism. From what I understand, in both instances poverty and unemployment shot up.

It was a response to the crisis of the late 70's. People like Milton Friedman denounced the welfare system and concluded that the crisis was happening because states were spending too much money (hence the whole inflation problem, which Friedman "resolved" with his famous monetary theories).
Reagan and Thatcher simply picked up on this and used it to privatize savagely every public industry they could find, crack down on trade unions (they blamed them for being "too strong") and essentially bring the famous neo-liberal policies of the 90's.
