Missing Iraqi Antiquities Found in Secret Vault
Sat June 7, 2003 10:26 AM ET
By Andrew Marshall

"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Almost all of the priceless items feared stolen from the Baghdad Museum when it was ransacked by looters have been found safe in a secret vault, the U.S.-led administration for Iraq said on Saturday."

"A special team of U.S. investigators working at the museum to check the extent of the looting has concluded that around 3,000 items were still lost or stolen, compared with initial estimates of up to 170,000. Most of the missing items were used for research, rather than exhibition."

"Earlier this week, 179 boxes that contained the vast majority of the museum's exhibition collection were discovered safe in a secret vault," the administration said in a statement."

"The discovery of these boxes containing nearly 8,000 of the most important items from the museum's collection means that the work of the investigation team is drawing to a close."

How's the Liberal media gonna to stomach this, huh?

I believe U.S. forces in I raq deserve an apology for the media's slanderous comments concerning them and the supposed "looting" of Iraqi museums.

Where was this secreat vault, and who put the artifacts there? Not the American military! This in no way detracts from the fact the bad planning on behalf of the Americans that left the jewels of a culture ungaurded, which was the initial complaint which still stands strong, just because the end result is now not as bad, that in no way justifies an apology for a critisism that is correct.

"Almost all" - yeah right.
What a load of bullshit. So all the looters ran and took the stuff to the secret vault? Come on, DC, this is just pure crap.

"US led admin" - The "liberal" media can apologise when the US military apologises to Iraq. Individually, and personally.

Didn't Geraldo Rivera do a special about a "secret vault"? I think it was AL Capone or something....For fuck's sake, they couldn't do any better that re-hashing Geraldo's nonsense?

The artifacts were stored in the vault before the war began. We didn't know about this vault, and it was assumed by the media that they were all looted.

There was looting D.C. I saw the pictures of smashed artifacts in the news papers. Its just lucky that the Iraqis at least GAVE A DAMN ABOUT THEIR CULTURE and it proves the Americans are shmucks and where unable to do something that they should have done. Now who bombed the National Library?

that same media who assumed that they were all looted is telling you now that they weren't. And you believe it nonetheless, whatever it tells you.

You need help.

According to the Geneva convention the conquerer is the responsible one andso it was the US's duty to take care of those artifacts. That they have had luck with this "secret" artifact. Doesn't mean that they have a job well done. That the artifacts have been found back, doesn't mean that the US's performance is justifialbe.

I would not be surprised at all if the US governmet actually stole them in the first place thinking the were going to get some divine answers from the artifacts of the "mysterious east" (you know, yanquee fantasies about noah's arc...holy grail...etc.)but when they turned
out to be simple culteral antiquities, pottery, statues, etc, they simply leaked the "secret vault" (what kind of fucking bullshit story is "they were in a secret vault the whole time" anyway) story to the right-wing media (like that's hard) and rode the coat tails of nightly reports from hot news women who have "way to much public credibility to lie"

Now remember this is just a thought...Not fact.

EDIT:
Regardless of what happened DC, you and you apology can go fuck yourselves.......forgetaboutit.

Actually, the Germans hid many tons of museum artifacts in secret vaults below the city of nuremburg during world war II.

Remeber DC my good man...I said it's just a thought...not fact...I was not in Baghdad to witness any cultural crimes being commited if there were any at all...It is entirely possible the secret vault story is fact...However...I just don't buy it.

And another thing DC...How do we even know that thesr "artifacts" are even the ones that were supposedly stolen/destroyed? Could it not be possible tht the US simply made this story up after receiving more than harsh critisism again from so many other nations...You know DC performing a little "damage control".

Why should we apologize? The right wing are the ones lying and looting, bombing and burning, cheating and rigging elections, you owe us an apology for the wrong you've done to the world.

I for one am glad that these articafts have been found. I was quite disappointed that they were reported missing.

I think there is some confusion here.

First of all, US soldiers weren`t accused of "looting" the Iraqi museum, they were accused of not protecting it from looters.

And those charges still stand. The simple fact of the matter is that greater harm was avoided because some Iraqies had the forsight to hid most of the museum`s treasures before Bagdade fell. Also those "179 boxes" weren`t "discovered" by magic, the yankies were taken there by the Iraqies, presumably museum officials, who had stashed the pieces.

Vinny Rafarino

That does seem to be the most probable scenario El Che.
